Babies do not have the same degree of temperature control that adults do. If they are running a fever or have a virus then their temperature can rise quite rapidly. You can usually treat this with something as simple as a dose of Calpol – but first you have to know that it’s happening. That’s why you should always have a baby thermometer to hand. Placing your hand against a baby’s forehead may give you a rough idea of whether or not the child is hotter than normal – but it isn’t an accurate measure of temperature and shouldn’t be used as anything other than a first indication.
