As a guitar teacher, I have noticed that there seem to be areas that students want to gloss over or skip in the hopes of simply playing a song sooner.  They do not always want to slow down and get all the technical bits and pieces right.  They just want to play the song!  Sometimes this is not a problem, but when they start glossing over foundational techniques such as alternate picking, it can cause problems.  I have had to go back and assign an effective alternate picking exercise for many students who should have been past that point, but did not really learn it at first.
